Frequently Asked Questions About Generators

What Generator Type Do I Need?

There are generators on the market to suit a wide range of uses & applications – including home/residential, trades work, farming, mining and much much more. Generator types typically fall into four main categories –inverter recreational, portable trade, home and backup, and diesel generators. The type you will need depends on your situation, budget and power needs. Inverter Generators; These are quiet compact units and the smallest in the range. Since these generators use inverter technology which responds to load, they produce a very clean voltage. Inverters are well-suited to powering sensitive electronics like phones, laptops and televisions. Inverter technology also helps to make these units energy efficient. Portable trade generators; As the name suggests, portable trade generators are suitable for trades and can be carried easily from job to job. They typically come with steel rollover frames and condenser-style alternators, making them robust and reliable units ideal for an on-site power source where heavy loads are involved. They can be either single phase or 3-phase to suit a wide range of situations and power needs. Petrol units are great for general trade use while diesel units are well-suited for larger trade and mining site applications such as powering heavy machinery. Home Backup Generators; These generators are ideal for providing power to households or small businesses during outages. Having one of these units on-hand during a planned or unplanned outage could prevent you having to shut your business down for the day or throw out a lot of spoiled food from your home fridge and freezer! Home and backup generators are typically powered by gas and propane – affordable, readily-available, and relatively clean and efficient fuels. Gas generators can be connected to mains gas or operated using bottled LP gas if mains gas is not available. Choose a home backup generator to give you peace of mind that your family will be unaffected during a blackout or electrical emergency. Diesel generators; These are large commercial generators designed for backup or standby power during outages, remote businesses that operate off-grid, data centres, mining sites or large events. Diesel generators suit situations where a portable generator would not be sufficient for the power level the job requires. Due to the size and weight of most diesel generators, a crane or forklift is often required if the generator needs to be moved. However, these generators are typically stationary for long duration's before being moved, for example from one mining site to another or at the end of a festival or carnival. Commercial businesses might also hire these units for extended job requirements. Large stationary diesel generators operate on 3-phase power. Unlike single phase which only uses only one wire, 3-phase operates using three wires which essentially means extra loads can be added. This makes 3-phase generators well-suited to jobs that require delivery of larger power loads. Choose a diesel generator if you have extensive and high power requirements.

What Size Generator Do I Need?

To work out what size generator you need, first you need to get clear on the following. What appliances do you want to run using your generator? You will need to know the power requirements of each in watts. This includes both start-up and continuous running wattages (these will be the same in some cases but not others). For some appliances, the starting requirement can be up to four times greater than the running output. This typically applies to items with a motor or heat element. This includes refrigerators, air conditioners, electric fryers, toasters, coffee machines, hair dryers, drills, saws, and grinders. How many appliances do you intend running at any one time? If there are several you will need to add up the power needs of all of them to arrive at a total. Calculating the power needs of your appliances in this way will give you a good idea of the size of the generator you require. For example, if your power needs come to 2,100 watts (2.1 kW), you should look for a generator with a capacity of at least this amount. You can find wattage information on the product data plate or in the user manual. If this is unavailable, other options include contacting the manufacturer, using a wattage meter or calling in an electrician to take readings. Diesel or Petrol Generator?

Whether you are powering a home, a piece of portable construction equipment, a recreational vehicle, an outdoor project site or a farm, both diesel and petrol generators can provide the power you need to keep the lights on and get the job done. Advantages of a Diesel Generator; While most of us are used to thinking of diesel as the 'more expensive' type of fuel, compared to petrol, that isn't necessarily the case when it comes to generators. Diesel fuel may still be more expensive than petrol, but diesel generators are also a good deal more fuel efficient than their petrol counterparts, generally burning about 50% as much fuel over any given period of time. Therefore, portable diesel generators are usually less expensive over time than petrol generators. This fuel efficiency—and the resulting edge that diesel generators have in power production—is the major advantage of going diesel over choosing petrol. Naturally, the benefits that diesel generators have in both fuel efficiency and power production are better observed in situations where generator use is consistent and power needs are high. Construction sites and farming equipment, for instance, place very high demands on their generators. As a result, companies working in these industries will almost always use diesel generators, simply because they can produce greater levels of power at lower cost. Advantages of Petrol Generators; Petrol generators, on the other hand, are arguably a better option for infrequent or temporary use. This is true for multiple reasons. First of all, petrol generators are generally less expensive—and available in more models and price ranges—than diesel generators, one of the few benefits of their reduced power. Petrol generators also run quieter and produced less harmful carbon dioxide fumes than their diesel brethren. Both of these characteristics may be determining factors if you are buying a generator as an intermittent-use backup power option for your home: having a generator that makes less of a racket and produces a lower amount of smelly fumes can simply make using a generator a more pleasant experience. In addition, if you are only using a generator for temporary, intermittent or low-load applications, then you wouldn't really see the benefits of a diesel generator anyway. Diesel generators are more fuel-efficient, but diesel also costs more than petrol, so you are less likely to notice the savings if you aren't making consistent or heavy-load use of your generator. Petrol generators also tend to break down faster than diesel generators because they run hotter, but you can still get many years of good use out of them if your generator applications aren't particularly intensive or high-demand.

How Much Do Generators Cost?

Generators can range from under $1,000 for small inverter and portable models up to hundreds of thousands of dollars for large diesel commercial generators. Recreational Use Generators: Prices range from about $800 to $7,000 (1-7 KVA). The lowest cost recreational generators are smaller and with lower capacity than those with higher prices. You will also pay more for premium brands such as Yamaha and Honda. Home Backup Generators: Around $7,000 to $14,000 (8-20 KVA). Differences between the lowest and highest cost units include capacity, size and power phase (e.g. single phase vs 3 phase). Portable Trade Generators: Range from around $1,000 to $21,000 (2-12 KVA). Some key differences between the lowest and highest cost units include fuel (petrol vs diesel) and starting mechanism (key vs auto). The higher priced units also come with canopy enclosure and water cooling. Large Diesel Generators: Approximately $5,000 to $450,000 (10-700+ KVA). Some of the differences between lowest and highest priced units include standby power (10 kVA vs 1,200 kVA), power phase (single vs 3 phase), and fuel tank size (30L vs 600L).

How Do Generators Work?

Mechanical energy supplied by the engine is converted into electrical energy through the power of motion. The level of energy produced depends on the size of the generator engine. At a basic level, the steps of this process are: 1. Mechanical power produced by the engine is forced into a circuit. 2. An electrical current is induced. 3. The current is directed through wires to provide power via a magnetic field. 4. The various components (see below) work together to control voltage and to keep the system operating as it should
